Eye Surgery

Well...my surgery was yesterday. I got there at 8:30, got valiumed up at around 9:30. My surgery was around 10:30ish...the valium didn't really help. I was still so terribly nervous, but they gave me a koala to hold onto. I was worried I would pop its little head off. I did a lot of internal breathing to calm myself down and chanting in my head. :-p I didn't do the standard Lasik, instead I opted for PRK due to the shape of my cornea.

The difference between PRK and LASIK is that PRK does not create a permanent flap in the deeper corneal layers. Instead the outer layer of the cornea, called the epithelium, is completely removed then the same laser that is used for LASIK is used to remodeling of the cornea. Of course the thing that sucks with PRK is that it takes a couple of days for the epithelium to grow back. :-( Of course after the surgery they put contacts (that act as bandages) over my eye and they will be removed on Monday.

It went well though, my doctor is really good. The only thing I couldn't stand was the smell of the laser burning the cornea. After the surgery there was immediate improvement in my sight. David was great and very supportive. He drove me there and waited in the lobby to drive me back home. I told David that I had to take eyedrops every 4 hours. When we came home I passed out and he came and woke me up at 3PM to administer the eyedrops. :-) THat is such a pain in the ass, for a couple of reasons. 1. There are 4 eyedrops I have to use for each eye. 2. They hurt like hell.

I am happy to say that so far my vision is great. PRK is also known to take a bit longer for vision to improve, I am fortunate mine has improved so quickly. I went in this morning for a post-op and so far, so good! The biggest worry of course is that I will get an infection in my eyes, which is why they gave me these eye shields I have to wear when I go to bed, I'm not supposed to take showers or wash my hair for three days, and I can't wash my face. :-p OF course, this si ridiculous to me. I can refrain from washing my hair, but I took a shower this morning, keeping my eyes closed and wearing the eye shields. I also am using a face cloth to wash my face.

Anywho...my eyes are starting to get reaslly tired, I need to take a nap...

Wow! you are very brave to do that! I don't think I could do it, I would freak out completely!

haha...thanks for saying so. It wasn't too bad. I was scared and I kept pushing it off for a couple of years. :-) It is just annoying, but I think PRK was a better decision for me versus Lasik.
